UN Security Council has given AU in Sudan and South Sudan six weeks to reach an agreement on the strategic mandate of Abyei, according to officials in the African Union on Wednesday evening.

The Commissioner for Peace and Security in the African Union (AU) Ramtane Lamamra, "The Council requested the commitment of the parties (...) to reach an agreement on the final status of the Abyei area during a period of six weeks from today (Wednesday)."

Lamamra said, "The Council also calls on the parties to reach an agreement within two weeks on the process of negotiations on the five disputed areas."

The president did not reach the two countries during their meeting in September to resolve all their differences, where it remained stuck several key issues such as border demarcation and the disputed oil region of Abyei.

Lamamra praised the progress achieved during the recent talks, but urged the parties to reach a quick solution on the outstanding issues.

He said that this time-out "should be enough to reach a solution to these problems."

And the evolution of the dispute between the two countries on these matters to the border battles between March / May between the armies of the two countries, in the deadliest clashes since the division of Sudan.

It is said that a protocol signed at the same time with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement on Sudan in 2005, provided for the granting of this region and the transitional situation until a referendum decide Abyei's population through their own destiny.

And if the dispute to determine who has the right to vote without a referendum, which was due mainly to coincide with the Southern Sudan Referendum which chose secession in January / January 2011.
